Bar Leave
Bar Leave
Associates may be eligible for one of the following paid Bar leaves:
- Jurisdiction Bar Leave of one to three weeks (including holidays)
- Patent Bar Leave of one to two weeks (including holidays)
- Tax Bar Leave of one week (including holidays)
Generally, attorneys may take only one Bar leave during their tenure with the firm. If an attorney has already taken a Bar Leave and time is needed to prepare and sit for the exam for admission to practice at a new location (and/or practice area) to which the firm has assigned the attorney, a secondary Bar leave may be approved by the firm. All Bar leave time must be taken by the examination date and any unused time will be forfeited. Bar leave is not granted for a second attempt to pass the Bar examination. With manager approval, additional time off to study and take a Bar exam will be designated as an unpaid “Personal Leave.”
Associates who wish to take a Bar Leave must notify their manager and Unum of their need for leave as soon as practicable and, if possible, at least 30 days in advance of going on Bar Leave. A Bar Leave Request Form needs to be completed and approved by your manager and submitted directly to Unum. You can find the Bar Leave Request Form on the PH Portal.
